Things To DoRich's family has put together a list of things to do both nearby Wells and throughout the surrounding areas and region. Mileages cited in the descriptions below are from Wells. See this map for addresses and directions to each place. These are only a sampling of all the sights to see in Maine. For an online travel guide to Maine follow this link. NearbyOther than sandy beaches, Wells is known for its antique shops. If this is an interest of yours click here for further information. If you want to take a short walk and visit some of the local shops, go to Kennebunkport (10 miles) or Perkins Cove (7 miles). The closest factory outlet stores are in Kittery about 18 miles from Wells. Whale Watching Tours leave from Kennebunk or further up the coast (10 miles). Deep Sea Fishing leaves from Perkins Cove (7 miles) and many other locations. Take a walk along the Marginal Way which runs along the rocky coast from Perkins Cove to Ogunquit. (7 miles) Visit a Maine lighthouse - Nubble Light - in York. (13 miles) Visit Maine's largest city - Portland - where you can walk around the Old Port area or take the Mailboat Run on the ferry around the Casco Bay Islands. (35 miles) Visit Freeport, where an old Maine village is now the nicest factory outlet shopping area as well as the home of LL Bean. (50 miles) Day TripsVisit Pemiquid Point, a classic Maine Lighthouse at the end of a peninsula along the rocky coast of Maine. For a listing of other light houses click here. From nearby New Harbor you can get a ferry to Monhegan Island about 10 miles out to sea. (100 miles). Visit Boothbay Harbor, one of the best known harbors and a popular spot with the tourists. (92 miles) Camden, along the western shore of Penobscot Bay, may be the prettiest harbor along the Maine coast and the home port of many of Maine's schooners. (115 miles) The nearest place for a scenic visit inland is just over the New Hampshire border to North Conway in the White Mountains. In the area you can drive to the top of Cathedral Ledge, lounge at Echo Lake State Park, take a short hike to Diana's Bath (also see this video), or take a drive on the Kancamagus, a National Scenic Byway. There are also factory outlet stores here. The North Conway area is the gateway to the White Mountain National Forest. (75 miles on secondary roads) Further notes about North Conway: While in the area some may want to take a side trip to Ebenezer's Restaurant and Pub in Lovell, Maine, rated as the number one beer bar in America and the world for the last five years in a row. The owners recently opened another beer bar in Brunswick called Lion's Pride. This is rated as World Class and is on the way to some other trips listed here. If anyone is interested in pottery, here are some spots that could be combined with other trips up the coast such as Boothbay Harbor, Pemiquid Point or Camden if they are not worthy of a trip on their own:
Longer TripsAcadia National Park and nearby Bar Harbor are worth the trip if you have the time but you probably need 4 hours to get there and lots of time to visit the park. The National Park Service web site is here. (210 miles) If you like outdoor activities, scenic Moosehead Lake might be worth a visit. (188 miles) Another spot for enjoying the scenery and outdoor activities is the Rangeley Lakes region which can be accessed by a National Scenic Byway. For information on moose watching check here. (150 miles on mostly secondary roads). |
